Mrs. Rowena Emerson
The funeral for Mrs. Rowena Emerson will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of J.H. Churchill Funeral Home. Eric Kelleher will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Murray Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday.

Mrs. Emerson, 76, Belmont Drive, Murray, died Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 12:56 p.m. at Murray-Calloway County Hospital.
After retirement, Mrs. Emerson devoted her life in volunteer service to others and spent most of her time helping those that could not help themselves. She was a member of Cherry Corner Baptist Church and the Goodfellowship Sunday School Class; was named a Kentucky Colonel for her efforts in helping those with disabilities; was a lifetime member of the Sigma Phi Sorority and was honored to have received the order of the rose. She was also a member of the Red Hatter Society.
A member of Civitan International, she served as president of her local club and served as Civitan Governor of the Kentucky District of Civitan. She was honored to be chosen a Fellow by Civitan International for her efforts in aiding the Civitan Foundation. She was a member of AARP Chapter 4437 and the REA unit presented the community award to her.
She was appointed to special advisory commission for senior citizens of Kentucky; is a past director on the board of Senior Citizens; appointed to P.A.D.D. Aging Committee representing Calloway County; was honored to have served three times as judge in elections held in Calloway County. She was presented the Citizen of the Year award for her service to the community in the area of Developmental Disabilities.
Born Aug. 13, 1932, in Portage Lake, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Ludger Pelkey and Hazel Major Pelkey.
Survivors include her husband, John C. Emerson; one daughter, Sandra (Sandy) Emerson, Houston, Texas; two sisters, Phyliss Gilbride and husband, John, Villages, Fla., and Irene Trimarchi and husband, Tony, of Hudson, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Viva Herndon, Durant, Okla.
