Lula Belle Hodges, formerly of Murray, passed away on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, in Evansville , Ind., with her daughter and son-in law by her side. What can you say about a legend who just happened to be my mother? Born April 12, 1915, she was 94 years young. She fought the good fight to the bitter end and Heaven has a new angel today.
Lula Belle Hodges was the daughter of the late Pat and Maude Beale of Almo , Ky. She outlived all her siblings, John Paul Beale, Leon Beale, Patty Roberts, Max Beale and Joe Rob Beale. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Glen Clifford Hodges, in 1987.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Mary Pat Williamson and her husband, Alan, of Evansville, Ind.; grandchildren: Dusty Seifers and her husband, Scott of Princeton, Ind. and Richard Glen Thomas of Denver, Colo. She was also blessed with more grandchildren from her beloved son-in-law Alan Williamson ; Ian Alan Williamson and his wife, Jackie, of St. Louis, Mo.; and Dezarae Rose Williamson of Evansville ; two great-grandchildren, Rachel Eleanor and Jon Mark Seifers.
Graduating from Almo High School as valedictorian at 16, Lula Belle began a lifelong learning career. She furthered her education with a master's degree in Elementary Education and she continued ultimately achieving 30 hours above a masters and finally the Rank One status. After World War II, she worked at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio and had the distinction of seeing the youngest Wright brother speak at a lecture. Later she served as acting postmaster in Almo, Ky. She was a fifth grade teacher in the Murray City School System for 28 years and kept in close touch with many former students, especially "second daughter" and family friend, Linda Ryan Tomlinson.
She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church of Murray, Ky., and a world traveler having visited many countries with her husband Glen.
She was an active member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and UDC (United Daughters of the Confederacy). She was also a member and held offices in many other organizations, including Murray Woman's Club Zeta Department, The Magazine Club, and the Dorcas Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church.
She served as honorary grandmother to many friends of her daughter and granddaughter. She was loved by everyone who knew her and will be greatly missed by all.
The family will receive visitors at the J H Churchill Funeral Home today, Monday, February 22, from noon to 3 p.m., and the funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Pastor Sam Rainer will officiate and burial will follow at Murray Memorial Gardens .
