Funeral services for Bernice Cathey, 94, of Murray, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Blalock-Coleman & York Funeral Home with the Rev. Ryker Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Murray Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 4, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers will be Don Murdock, Ben Hendrick, Johnny McDougal, Bill Barton, Will Ed Bailey and Fred Richter. Congregational music will by provided with Robert Houston as the leader and Jennifer Wilson, pianist.
Cathey died at Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010, at 8:50 p.m. at Arbor Place of Puryear, in Puryear, Tenn.
She moved to Calloway County in 1945 and attended Locust Grove Baptist Church. She also attended Murray Teachers College and was a fourth generation teacher, having taught three years in Stewart County School System. She was also employed at National Fireworks, Inc. loading 50 caliber shells in World War II.
In addition to her parents, the Rev. James and Flora (Seawright) Thomas, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Lofton Cathey, whom she married June 5, 1942; and two sisters, Edith Barrett and Martha Sykes.
Cathey is survived by two daughters, Judy Cathey and husband, Charles Hornstien of Frederick, Md., and Jeanette Dickson of Felicity, Ohio; one son, Hal Cathey of Murray; and one granddaughter, Lucinda Catherine Dickson, of Felicity.
